Lord Shiva is believed to be the Hindu god. He is the destroyer or transformer among the three supreme gods (Trimurti) in Hinduism. Shiva is revered in form of lingam. He is said to be leading life of yogi as well as a house holder. He has two sons and a daughter and his wife is goddess Paravti. His abode is mount kailash.

The literal meaning of Shiva in Sanskrit is “the auspicious one”. Lord Shiva is known with various names in different part of India such as rudra, Maheshwara, shambhu and many more.

Maha Mritunjaya mantra also known as Lord Shiva mantra is one of the oldest mantra of Lord Shiva documented in Rig veda.It is one of the most powerful mantra. Chanting of this mantra purifies and enlightens the soul. The mantra rejuvenates, mind and body, confers wealth and prosperity, health, long life and brings peace and contentment. It deflects death and all kind of accidents. It has great curative powers.

The words of Lord Shiva Mantra go like this:

“Om tryambak yajamahe, Sugandhim pushtivardhanam’ Urvarukamivah bandhanan, mrityor mukshiya maamritat.” (Rig-Veda Verse, mandala: 7 sukt-59, mantra-12/ Rishi: Vashista/ Mantra devata- Rudra)

The meaning of this mantra is : “Praise to the three eyed one, who increases the prosperity, who has sweet fragrance, who frees the world from death and disease liberate me as cucumber is severed from its vine,O Shiva give me the nectar of immortality”.

There is small anecdote related to Lord Shiva mantra. It is said that Lord Shiva taught this mantra to Shukracharya, demon king who pleased Shiva by his penance and became all powerful but Shukrachayra had to teach the mantra to Brihaspati’s son .Later this mantra was given to maharishi Vashisht for the well fare of people.
